Can I upgrade my radio?

I have a 1999 Ford F-150. The radio has cassette only. I bought a Double Din radio from a 2003 Ford F-250 with CD/cassette/radio. The plugs on the back are identical (2 plugs plus antenna cable). I plugged in the new radio and the displays worked find. It changes stations, on FM and AM, and a CD will go in and purport to play and extract just fine. Problem is, there is no sound. Put the old radio back in and the sound is fine. With the identical connectors, I don't believe one needs an external amp and the other does not, but the radio worked fine when it was pulled from the 2003 vehicle. Any help would be appreciated.
