Service guys checked it out yesterday, its the fuel injectors, which are making their normal sound. However, this sound is echoing up the air vents.

As I don't want the dash dis-assembled and end up with a dozen squeeks and rattles I'm just going to live with it.

New solution....turn CD/radio up to about level 6.
VERY interesting - so it's just a design fault. My VL (that I used to have) had ticking injectors but you could only hear them from outside. The under-bonnet noises didn't get into the car so easily.

So it looks like this is something we have to live with.
