seal swelling stuff

Me steering box is leaking from the pressure seal on the input shaft at the
top.

Anyone had any success with that stuff you put in the oil to swell the
seals, and if so, any recommendations as to which kind to buy?

On the face of it, It doesn't look too hard to replace the seal, presuming
the fecker is available and presuming2 that the shaft isn't grooved. But
putting stuff in the fluid would be far easier, of course.

My 90 failed its mot last year because of a leaking box.
I remember seeing a product last year at the land rover show that cured
this,But for the life of me i can't remember what it was called.
I went into a motor factors and explained what i was looking for,And he
handed me a bottle of seal swell and said that they were all as good as each
other.
That isn't the proper name,But thats what they're called if you know what i
mean.
It cost me £6.99 and it worked a treat.
I went back for a re-test the next day and he thought i had put a recon box
on it.
Its mot time again next month and still no sign of any leak.

Does this work in gearboxes. I have a Freelander (!!!) but also have a Volvo
V40 which leaks all the time, a known fault with Renault gearboxes in Volvos

Well, it did indeed used to be called "Seal Swell." We used to use it in
bike forks and it worked a treat. In fact, it can work so well that it can
make the forks a little slow to react. Some say it b****s the seal rubber
but what the heck, it's knacked already!

quite. fecking sight cheaper than a recon steering box, and also cheaper
than getting someone esle to replace the seal, which appears to be somewhat
hassle-riddne and require sundry special tools to get the sod apart.

may prove useful. Got some slick50 stuff in there at the moment which
claims to stop leaks. we'll see what happens.
