electrical to window problem 91 XJ40 VDP

there seems to be something wacko with my electrical going to one of my
windows. one of my passenger windows was having problems rolling back up,
finally is just stopped going up. i took the motor out to see if it was a
problem with the motor but the motor would run both directions with either
wire connected. however if i hooked up both wires then the motor would only
run one direction. i think thats the way it worked, its been a while since
i fooled around with it.

has anyone had this problem? how do you go about hunting down the source of
this problem?

thanks!

try spraying the hell out of the switches.

its an electrical problem. not mechanical.

Hi R,

The switches used develop faults sometimes. It is one of the more common
reasons for the window to fail as you have described.

Cheers

gotcha, i did test it out and it wasnt the switch. the switch worked in
both directions, its one of the wires to the switch is bad. but im not sure
how to pinpoint where in the wiring has gone bad.

Hi R,

It may be one of the other switches as they 'feed through'. This is so
that you cannot operate more than one window at a time.

Cheers

Chris

I know this is late, but I came across this thread when looking through
the ng. Best way to (relatively) non-destructively test wiring, use
needles poked through the insulation and a multimeter set to continuity,
preferably the "beep on continuity" type. Then you can trace through
and isolate the faulty wire/connector. Not very common for these to
fail, in my experience. Be careful. Do not assume that a wire going
into a unit is common with the same colour wire coming out of it. For
example, on the XJ40 the green (earth/chassis/ground) wire going into
the window winder module (which is also used for the puddle lamp) has a
diode on a PCB before going to the green wire out. There is continuity
one way and not the other (reverse the meter probes) when OK. In my
case it was no continuity either way, which meant a 1 cent diode and
$10,000 worth of associated time to strip down the door and module, fit
new diode and put it all back together again. (I value my time
highly...). Mind you, although I was 99.9% successful, I did have one
screw left over...

Oh, and I should add. Disconnect battery (earth terminal, never the live
first) before doing continuity tests or you will get erratic results/blown
continuity meter. And before you do disconnect battery, have you got the
radio security code if applicable, 'cos that'll need resetting when you
connect again! I'm still trying to get mine...
