Not being a great mechanic,My Disco has failed an MoT for an oil leak on
front shock absorber,Could anyone answer these questions before I commit to
a garage doing the necessary repair work.
1). How much for the shock absorber (Original LR part or patent)?
2). How long to do the job?
Thanks in Advance for any replies.

Be sure it needs doing and it's not the WD40 squirt up the shocker, oldest
trick in the book that one.

Never replace just one damper, you should do both front ones. I did mine on the 110 & it took me a couple
fo hours, but i did the springs as well so i didn't have to arse about with the turret. Springs are very
cheap, you may as well chuck two new front ones on to save the hassle with the turret bolts!

spring and dampers are piss cheap for pattern ones, from Paddock and no
doubt from our own Beamends Richard. Paddock's price for original-spec
armstrong rear ones is about 8 quid plus vat, ordered some yesterday (sorry
Richard - had to get water pump from Paddocks so I could send the old one
back, and wanted to top up the order to "free delivery" level. You get the
order for series bits in a month or so when I can afford 'em :))

I can also recommend the open-sided turrets as sold by David "Llama", once
fitted, you never need to remove the sods again, cos you can get the damper
out of the side of 'em.

If you're doing springs as well, don't bother undoing the turret unless it's
shagged - spring and damper will come out the bottom.

Only at FULL axle articulation though, even with a fat twat like me sitting on the hub! As daft as it
sounds, I used proper strong duct tape to compress the second one as the first pissed me off so much! You
only have to make it off the car & it will pop as it's under so much tension so take care. But it did
work for me!

ISTR the brake pipes restrict the axle from dropping - what you have to do
is remove the caliper from the hub, tie it to the body with a bit of string.
There's nothing then to stop the axle dropping further. Mind, on the 110,
didn't find it necessary, but it was on the disco.

either that or buy a pair of spring compressors.

Thanks for all the advice given, any guesses on how much I will be expected
to pay (£gb).and how long in time the job could take?

replace front dampers *should* be about an hour... but that's if it all
works according to plan. If the turret bolts shear it's an additional half
hour or so per side to replace 'em, I should think - and if the damper top
nuts decline to come loose...

Repair Operation Times version 3 says

front dampers both sides, renew 1.00
front dampers both sides EFI, renew 1.30
front damper one side, renew 0.55
front damper one side EFI, renew 0.85

those are times in decimal hours, BTW, so the "one side" isn't 55 minutes,
it's 33. And no, I don't know why EFI ones take half an hour longer.

as to cost... well, depends who's doing it and where they get the parts.

Re:Shocks & Failed MoT.
Yesterday morning,I was meant to take my Disco back to the garage that
failed it's MoT,these were the same people that said that I needed a new
shock absorber, because of an oil leak and my rear brake caliper was leaking
brake fluid also.
I was quite concerned about the way I felt that I was being treated, when
trying to get an estimate on parts, time and labour cost, all that I managed
to acheive was the labour cost, that came in a £28 per hour.
prior to takiong my Disco there,I went to my Local Halfords store, that has a
Franchise piggy backed onto it run by the AA,I asked the technician there if
he would take a look at the aforementioned problems and he kindly placed my
vehicle upon his hoist and meticulously scrutinised both sets of shocks and
all the brake calipers, returning an emphatic 'Nowt wrong there mate',Of
course I was ecstaticat this news & bewildered as too why the original
garage decided to say there was problems, when they must have known there
wasn't.
Although I have now paid for Two Mot's at a cost of £88,I cannot imagine
exactly how much the unessesary repairs would have cost me,where I now also
imagine that I could have been fleeced by any amount.
The lessons learnt here are really valuable,I will not return to the
original garage, and will deter other people I know, that may look at any
repair work done there.
And I should look at going to Night school for a crash course in car
maintenance.
Thanks for the tips and replies.
