I have a 2000 ford taurus base model. My car about 65,000 miles started to have trouble with transmission AX4S. I would be getting thunks by going through the gears, coming to stop it would thumb down and jult taking off. Also there is was a delay while in drive and coming to a stop and selecting R.Also the rear axle or something moans when there is a heavy load in the car. Back seats are uncomfortable for when there are more than three people in the car due to end of seats are not completely flat but round in a c or U like shape. Gas is ok in this car nothing fancy, i only used prem in the engine and got nothing good from it. Breaks warp quickly and i find it not smooth. Oh the trans broke down at 85,000 miles forward cluth piston snaped when i was leaving the grocery store there was a jult and a pop. Reverse still works anyhow. I find the taurus not a good car for any type of work trips or long drives here and there. You wont see a taurus used in everyday police duty in a city environment, but we can easily find a Impala or stock intrepid with no problems in the field. It seems like these generation of taurus were built on a ford budget from the tires down the to shocks. Then in 28 degree weather the heater stop working and then after slamming on the brakes it came back with heat after 45minutes of driving. Rear window is stuck or motor is gone in it. Dash bulb blown behind 60MPH mark. Ford claims the transmission is Electronic controlled and adjust to the driver. BUll crap this trans shifts exactly the same ever time and there is no adjustments done by the computer, the computer is in Read ONly mode. Seat belts retract when they want to. Sometimes the Check engine like would come on with error about EGR vavle sticking. Read post 39 you will see.

With our cars its no fun, we seem to be stuck in band-aid land. Those mopar guys are having all the fun with base model stock stuff, I wish i got a mopar now UGGGGGGG!

Advice to FORD:

Ford should of scraped the design of the AX4S trans back in 1992. These transmission are only good for old granny. Junk the 3.0 vulcan and be updto date with everyone else and have a standard 189-200HP engine like everyone else has in their base model. At the value and class the taurus is in everyone will come out better with a Chrysler or chevy vehicle and our resell values you hold more than this ford.
