The most common problem is the shift motor not responding. As a short
term try at "fixing" it you can tap on it with a hammer a few times
alternating with pushing the buttons to try and get it to move. The
permanent fix is to remove it and clean it up. There are two plastic
"stops" inside the motor that often get brittle and break which may
allow it to over run it's end positrons and get stuck. There are
detailed instructions for doing this on a website but I don't have it
handy. A google search of the newsgroup archives would probably
produce it.
