Interestingly, ethanol was one of the options for an octane booster before there was leaded fuel.
For some reason - probably the profileration of cast iron heads with valve seats cut right into the head - lead won out over ethanol even though it's octane boosting properties are way better than lead.
I think the E10 fuel is a great idea - all that stuff about eating rubber components in your fuel system are just FUD for most cars...
