there's a bushing that connects the shift cable to the transmission linkage. The connection is located in the front-left side of the engine. If this bushing is worn and there is a lot of play, that could be your problem...bigger problem is, that Ford doesn't make the part and nobody else does either...you have to make one.....I'm in that same situation....have fun, I am.
