Ford Motor Co. pulled back the curtain today on one of the hot new concept cars it will unveil at the North American International Auto Show next week.
The Ford Interceptor was inspired by the big sedans that were synonymous with Ford in the 1960s.
The concept features a manual six-speed gearbox mated to a Ford Racing 5.0-liter V-8 Crammer engine that delivers 400 horsepower. But in a nod to the future, the Interceptor is designed to run on E-85 ethanol. It is based on the rear-wheel-drive Mustang platform.
The interior features a powerful, macho look with black leather and plenty of metal.
"This concept celebrates the best of American muscle, showing customers what ‘modern muscle' is all about," said Peter Horbury, executive director of design for the Americas. "The Interceptor concept is much like a Marine in dress uniform. He looks smart and elegant, but you can see the raw power that lies beneath."
Freeman Thomas, Ford's director of North American strategic design, said the concept aims at creating a driver's sedan.
"(It) is a sedan, but with the heart and soul of a performance car," he said. "This car is about restraint — and not clouding the driving experience with too much technology. There aren't a lot of layers between the driver and the road with this car."
The Interceptor also showcases what Ford is calling "a possible next-generation" four-point safety belt that it claims is more comfortable and easier to use than traditional three-point seatbelts. Inflatable seatbelts are also included in the rear to protect backseat passengers.
As for the vehicle itself, Ford has no immediate plans to develop a production derivative.
