Mike, Being an XLT, I would assume its a V6.
The Escape's fuel consumption is very sensitive to how you drive - so go easy on the pedal.
Generally speaking, I get 13-14litres per 100km with my 04 Escape Ltd, but if I do a few days of heavy (lead-foot) driving, I can see it go up to 16-17litres/100km.
I very much doubt the dealer had the tank completely full, and the indicator or sensor may have been "stuck", so I would suggest taking your measure of fuel consumption after the next time you fill up.
