I had a similar problem with the OD light flashing, Ford said it needed a computer update which they did at the cost of $450. Thankfully it did correct that problem though.

You really need to take your car to be scanned for codes. Early model Explorers without a dedicated 4x4 module had problems with the GEM that would cause them to engage/disengage 4x4 on their own. They also had problems with the solenoid that does the engagement on the transfer case. You're not very clear on this but I should also point out that this system was NOT designed to be used on sealed roads. It should be left in Auto mode unless you're driving on ice, sand or unsealed roads and the car will determine if 4x4 needs to be engaged by looking at differences between the wheel speed sensors signal.
