1988 F-150 iginiton problem

Ok so I wrecked my F-150 hitting a telephone poll. Now on impact it was still running. So I shut it off and about 2 or so more mins later I turned it over and it started. It was sitting at the towing place for a week or 2. We get it back and got new parts on it (bumper, hood, drivers side fender, inner fender) Now it won't turn over unless you turn the key to run, and contact both posts of the solenoid using a screwdriver. Trying the key to start it won't, when all the over nothing happens just the brake light on and what not. My question is what is it? My step dad's step dad says it is the starter but as soon as you contact both post it turns over and starts.
