Are you sure it's the cable itself? If the EA is the same as later E series models there may be a problem down on the bell housing end of the cable.
Check the little fork thing that the cable hooks into on the end of the release lever. It should have a rubber shock absorber on it too. On my long gone ED (great car!) the cable did not break, instead the fork sections "straightened out" and let the cable go. Rather than having to pull the gearbox to get at the release lever in order to replace the fork, I got underneath and worked the absorber loose and got it out of the release lever in situ.
