There is a small screen inside the tank- but should not obstruct pumping capability unless you have a very dirty tank. You can check fuel pressure. I would think if it was the pump- you would have problems during acceleration and other drivability issues.
Keep your tank full and monitor symptoms when it is full. Check your gauge- maybe it isn't accurate.
