Have an 87 (03/87) 2.9 with 5-speed....138,XXX miles... Guy who had it before had put ATF in the trans (short period of time)..... manual called for 80-90 in all 87's trannies... (88 1 was atf, the other 90w) so thats what I put back in. Now that it's really cold.. sometimes shifting is a little more difficult, until the trans "warms up" from use.... is this typical?? Was the other guy wrong to use ATF in an 87.. of was I wrong to put it back??
Good question. I went on to the autozone website and this is what they say.
FLUID RECOMMENDATION
Use Standard Transmission Lube SAE 80 in the 4-speed or Mitsubishi 5-speed manual transmission. The Mazda (Toyo Kogyo) 5-speed transmission uses Mercon® automatic transmission fluid. Use of improper fluids could lead to leaks or transmission damage.
There is a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB #01157 INFORMATION REGARDING TRANSMISSION FLUID USAGE CHARTS. *SLC) for your 87 but I can't find the details.
The easiest way to find out is call your local Ford service dept on Monday.
