Just a quick question - what models have a camshaft that will suit an EL futura? I've got a EF stage 2 Crow Cam at the moment which doesn't suit the EL, but was a stunner in a mate's EF XR6. The crow web site suggests that the crow EF XR6 cam doesn't suit any other model - but would the stock EF & EF XR6 cams suit the EL, or are they totally incompatible?
Try more compression 9:5 to 1 as in the Xr6[not that high] and maybe more fuel pressure. A good tunner on a dyno will do wanders..Have you done the exhaust as well?
Maybe some more advance / timming? Again a good tunner would sus that!!
I've been through 3 different tuners so far, and the only solutions they could come up with we're a new (custom & $$) chip. The only other mods I've done so far to the engine are a 2.5" mandrel bend exhaust + extractors and a K&N pod which we're done berfore the cam - the thing flew before the cam...
If I can, I'd like to swap with a standard or XR cam to be nice and safe - the other half drives the car for now so I'd like to get it running right while saving the pennies for a BA XR6
Cam timing maybe ??? Tuner that will sus it out NOT one who sets everything to manu specs.. Thats not a tuner in my opinion thats a fitter..And I bet he blamed the cam? If he can't get it to perform he atleast should be able to tell you where the problem is. With a wide band 02 senser for a start..Not sure on six's but the 8's have a system in the eec that tells you the flow rates of each cylinder so you know the cfm...etc Maybe the vacuum is lower and doesn't open the manifold bypass soon enough??
I have some specs which should be put somewhere for general good use.
Some advice I can give you stoney is to consider a Wade stage II camshaft. They can regrind you stocky for about $200. I have seen an EF with an EL inlet, 2.5" exhaust with a Wade stage II camshaft come out in front of my XR6. He didn't have an LSD but was breaking wheelspin well into 2nd gear at about 80 ks. Had heaps low down and in the midrange.
Just beware the lifters need shimming if you are going to fit this cam (not a hard job).
Wade Stage II Cam specs are as such:
Lift = 0.48 (crow lifts can be around 0.04" higher)
Centre Angle = 112
Duration = 264 (inlet & exhaust)
For the ELs I only have the advertised specs, as they came form a Ford dealer mechanic. It doesn't mean that these are correct though, so don't quote me - just FYI
INLET:
Std EL 16/68 62/18
EL XR6 14/68 56/24
From this, you can see why the XRs have a larger exhaust valve.
Good luck, and keep us posted on how you go.
JT
P.S XRs run 300 MPa fuel regulator, and 9.3:1 compression. Porting carried out on exhaust and inlet ports and combustion chamber shape. Could still be better though.....
Just to clarify, EL specs given as
INLET: BTDC/ABDC
EXHAUST: BBDC/ATDC
Here are some more specs I picked up off crow.
ROLLER CAM PROFILES FOR FALCON 6 OHC ENGINES
These are measurements of cam lobes not valve timing.
Use the standard specification for an approximate comparison.
PROFILE 0.050” ADV LOBE LOBE
TYPE DUR DUR LIFT CENTRE
Two of the tuners went through everything on my car from fuel pressure to O2 levels to cam timing, and they both suggested that my car would need way more ignition timing in the mid range - apparently so much that I would need a chip to get the correct timing....(?!?)
I've never heard of Wade Cams before. Where abouts can you get them, and do you have any extra info on them?
Could I take an EF cam to them and get a grind that will work in the EL?
If yours is a standard EL cam, then yep Wade can regrind for about $200 I think. They have been in business for a long time (over 60 years I think) so they are reputable.
contact them on 9328-4001 (melbourne). They have 3 stages of cam grind. Like I said, 2 is the one I have seen and it works well.
I have only the highest praise of the cam that ended up going in my old GT and that was a Wade custom/dual profile grind cam.
Russell.
