It's got to be the alternator. Same thing happened to me, the light came on while I was driving but didn't think much of it because I didn't know what it meant.
Turned the car off, then went to start it the next day and the battery was dead as a dodo and the alternator had died. Definately get it looked at.
Before you start spending some money, chack the negative on the battery terminal, make sure its secure and not corroded, same goes for the earth cable.

I think you made a typo... Earth and negative are the same cable. Maybe you meant positive and earth:s5
