Hi guys...

Just wondering if anyone can help me... I have had 2 C4s in my car and both have come out 5 times because they blow the front pump seal.

Box 1: Second hand:
Leaked 3 times.
We replaced it with....

Box 2: Reco box
(this was in my mates car and never leaked)... in my car though it has damaged the front pump seal twice.

The convertor has been relinished, we sent it out again to get tested and it was perfect.

Then we changed the ringear (brand new).

Checked the endflow (about 2-5mm play) which I was told is normal.

BUT NOW AGAIN IT IS LEAKING FROM THE FRONT PUMP SEAL... THIS IS THE SIXTH TIME!!!!!

It blows the seal roughly every (roughly 1000ks) it is a pain in the arse and it is REALLY annoying me as we have to pull the box out each time to replace the seal....

Does anyone have ANY IDEA what it could be???? and please don't say replace it with toploader because I have it up to here with stupid answers. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!

This is a relatively easy one.

The seal has an inner and outer seal. If the installer doesn't grease between the the seals it:

a) cuts a line into the convertor shaft
b) destroys the seal

I'd say it's one of the above. Check the convertor shaft. If it's a stock convertor? I'd put money on it's undersized. No grease in seal = dead seal = leaks.

Food for thought.

If the bottomend bearings in your engine are worn? It'll also destroy the front main/rear main on the engine also the front main seal on the auto.

[edit] Overfilled auto will do it also. If the auto is for some reason over pressurizing? it'll do it too. That seal is only supposed to get splashed. So if the oil levels above the seal? It'll leak. For example parking on a hill can put the oil above the seal and will leak.

Hmm interesting points Brendan... Well it definately isn't overfilled so it isn't that. Just met a guy today who said maybe it IS overpressurising.

The bearings in the motor are approx 5000kms old. It chewed one rear main at around 1000ks and has been perfect since then.

I will bring up your points to the guys and see what they say. Thanks mate.
