I reckon your looking at 13's, I've got a few mags with this sort of thing. One bloke with an XA coupe with an absolutely mad 351, switched to a pre-pollution 460 with some mild work. Reckons it isn't any faster, but is far more streetable and even a bit easier on the juice. He was getting low 13's.
The 427-8-9's were performance engines designed for NASCAR and road racing. The reason ford was in to understating HP was so that these cars were insurable - you're right though, they made way more power than they let on about.
460's were for cruising. All the same I'd much rather a big block than a 351. Just want more...
If you want to race a big block, go pre-pollution - late 60's I think- And parts would have to be pricey. You'd do better with something like a 428 Cobra Jet than a 460, but then you're looking at big $$$.
