Hi Raptor,
I don’t think it is an after-thought. If you look under some 4WD’s most will have some sort of bracing, this is to add strength & rigidity to the body structure for rock climbing. Remember that there is no chassis rails, so the whole body is flexing if there is not enough strength built in.

Also, I saw that Ford had that X bracing from the very early test stages. If you look in the Wheels Magazine Special Territory Edition, there is a picture of the underneath of a test vehicle with Territory components using a Falcon body, the X bracing is on this test vehicle.
