For performance again...an automatic is my choice because while you cannot dump the clutch, you can have super quick gear changes..quicker than manual.Where a manual can get off the mark better than me ,I overtake while they change gears.
Manuals require a clutch change regularly..that sux.
The ideal gear box would be a hybrid manual and automatic in one.One where you can dump a clutch and let it go the rest of the way in auto mode.Of course you can hold the revs on this box however you feel

Very well said mate, I prefer a manual gearbox personally, but I do know there are advantages and disadvantages to both.
One thing I do find fustrating in an auto is when you want it to drop down to 2nd, so you put your right foot down and instead of dropping back to 2nd gear straight away, it holds 4th for a second, then drops to 3rd, then finally drops back to 2nd and then almost straight away shifts back up to 3rd. Ok, it does the gearshifts quicker then I could do manually with a clutch, but in the same situation I would just drop it straight back to 2nd without the hesitation and unnessessary gear changes.
But having said that, an auto is easier to live with in peak hour, stop-go traffic, and is the only realistic option for some people, not just people who might have a physical reason for only being able to drive an auto, but also those people who just can't seem to get the hang of it and forget to use the clutch or ride the clutch, or forget to change gears (I don't know how with the engine screaming at you as it sits on redline, but I've heard of people who do this), so at the end of the day, it all really comes down to what you prefer.
Although autos behind smallish engines (anything smaller then a 6 cyl) should be banned! Nothing more fustrating then driving a 1.6L auto if you don't want to drive like my grandmother!
