Power Steering Fluid - 2002 Escape XLS

*2002 Escape XLS 2.0L 4-cyl w 5-spd manual.*

I'm planning on doing a power steering fluid flush. The owner's manual says to use
Mercon ATF, but from what I've read it's no longer available (not sure).
The auto parts stores sell P/S fluid of course, but I have no idea if it's the same as the Mercon, and I'd guess that ATF would be cheaper.
So... What fluid can I use for the power steering?

Changed plugs 2003 Escape = disaster

I took the plunge and changed the plugs on my 2003 Escape. It was a big job for me. I followed the directions posted somewhere on this forum. It ran like crap. The mechanic said I had screwed up 1 & 3 injectors (though no pinched wires) and the fuel dumping in from the 'stuck open' injectors damaged the catalytic converter.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Tried to save a few bucks and it's gonna cost me 3x as much it looks like.

Driving Light Replacement '05 and later Escape

My apologies if this has been addressed, but my searches found no related references. I've now had to replace the bumper-imbedded driving lights on my '05 Escape three times, once on the left and twice on the right. Though I never go offroad, apparently their low profile and proximity to the road leaves them vulnerable to any loose gravel, etc., that flies up and breaks them.

I saw on another forum where someone actually removed the bumper to replace these. That's just not necessary. Simply remove the tire and as many clips and nuts holding the fender liner as required, pull it back and the light will be exposed. You'll have to feel your way around to remove the 4 retaining nuts, but it gets easier each time.

Tips: The OE replacement lights are available for $30-$40 on e-bay.
I just added some heavy clear "fog lamp protectors" I also found on e-bay to protect against future breakage. I couldn't find them for an Escape, but found that Nissan Exterra specs worked just perfectly. So far, no more breakage.:hy:

Ford Escape Manual Transmission issues

I am new to this Forum, so Hi all!!

I have a 2006 escape manual transmission. At about 25000 miles the 2nd gear became difficult to engage, and when it did it was with a terrible shadder especially in the morning when it is cold. When warmed up for 5-7 minutes it engages normally without the shadder. The Ford dealer replaced the clutch ($1300, because the cluth is not covered by the warranty), but that didn't help. Now at 44 000 miles I have the same problem and I now hear the same shadder at the end of engaging the third gear. This is bothering me. My question is does anyone have access to the technical service bulletin nr. 17657?. Although this TBS is for Escape 2004, its title appears to tell me my Escape has the same problem. I have been to motorcraft TBSs, it is not there. OR if anyone has had this problem and they have solved it somehow could they share how they got around solving it?

Regards to all

03 Escape won't hold idle

I have a 2003 escape XLT w/ 6cyl engine. Last week the engine would crank fine, however it would NOT idle upon a cold start. I had to hold my foot on the accelerator to keep the engine running at a low RPM. Take the foot off, and immediately it would die. After a while, it would hold idle and I could drive fine and the performance was fine. Restarting was fine until the next day the same problems with not holding idle.

Took it to a mechanic and there were no codes, no engine light and he couldn't repeat the problem. The diagnostic did suggest the air/fuel mix was off, but not enough to throw a code. He suggested a new air filter and a cleaning of the MAF sensor. I thought it would be the IAC, however the mechanic didn't find any indication of a faulty IAC, and didn't want to throw parts at it prematurely. The mechanic also sugggested escapes/tributes have a history of poor performance on low octane gas.

I typically use 87 octane fuel and never had a problem in the 10K miles I have owned this car. Currently the car has 57K miles. I filled a half-tank of high octane fuel and have been running fine for now.

Should I add fuel injector cleaner...if so, which type/brand?

Does anyone else promote higher octane fuel?

Problems that just seem to go away always scare me. I am not sure how often "bad fuel" is the answer but konw of others who had issue with poor quality gasoline.

Please share your comments and I will post again as updates.

I just recently purchased an 09 Mariner 4cyl. To my advantage my brother owns and operated OverkillEngineeringMotorsports.com. I am looking to see if there is an interest in a WAI or CAI setup for these cars. I am going to have him make one for mine and just wanted to ask.

It will be made from 3" AL tubing, professionally welded, K&N filters, factory mounting locations ... Probably somewhere in the $250 range fully powdercoated with a filter.

What do you think?

Hello all I just recently purchased an 09 Mariner Premier 4cyl with the nave package.

The first issue I am having is when my fiance or anyone of 120or so lbs and around 5"2 sits in the pass seat, the air bag goes on and off intermittently. Does anyone else have this issue? My complaint is now being handled by Ford after taking it back to the dealer 4 times. The dealer was great and did everything they could, even tested their own receptionist in my car and another and it still did it.

My second question is: Is there a way to disable to speed sensitive functionality of the navigation? I cant get a wiring diagram for the wire that is connected tot he speed wire. On my 06 Expedition it was hooked into the the parking break but this one is defiantly speed sensitive and activates around 3mph. I just have to get rid of this!!

Thanks all in advance!
