Hello all, I have an 01 Windstar Sport. After sitting for about a year I decided to put it back on the road. The O\D was flashing and the van felt as though the brakes were dragging. Changed all brake pads, rotors and drums ect. Now to fix the O\D light. From what I'v read I think it could be the Vehicle Speed Sensor. When driving it hits about 3200rpm to go 80km\h and never does change gears and also does not have power enough to drive up the car ramps. Its a $40.oo part here, is it worth the gamble or should I take to the local trans. shop for a dianosis.

Next issue: Oil pressure light flickers and is sometimes steady at idle

So, I think I finally solved the EGR port problem and I am trying to make sure this van runs for another 30-80K miles.

When the engine idles and the oil is pretty hot, the oil lamp (idiot light) on the dash flickers and is sometimes steady, but you can feel the engine doing it's thing while the oil light flickers.

I notice this mostly in gear at idle with the A/C on. The compressor shifts on and the idle will go down a tad bit and the oil lamp will be steady.

Also, I have noticed that the engine has a rough sounding idle at that point and think that the oil is just not getting to where it needs to go fast enough.

So, with all this being said, do you think it's time for a new oil pump?

Or, should I check the return in the oil pan?

By the way:
Compression tests all revealed the cylinders between 150-160 PSI

I have just finished converting my 93 Aerostar from an AWD Automatic to a 5 speed manual tranny. I use it to tow a trailer often and the automatic was getting tired. If anyone is interested in details I can respond. It handles a car trailer very well.

06 Freestar LTD - Ran fine, had plugs/wires replaced, now P0420 DTC

Hi

Just had my plugs and wires replaced as part of 60k maintenance. Went to Midas. They had a really hard time with this, kept getting misfire issues. Finally had it resolved, but the 2nd drive of the car tripped the Engine Service light. I went to the local auto parts store to have them ck the codes and it's a P0420 - Cat efficiency low on bank 1.

I know the Midas folks said they had a lot of misfire issues once they changed the plugs, and kept trying to fix it -finally was a bad new plug in #3 cylinder. I researched this code and found misfire can cause damage to the cat converter. Any other ideas of what changing plugs and wires would do to cause this code? The Midas experience was kind of annoying - took much longer than planned for them to do this and they had many issues.

Said they had to drop engine cradle to get to plugs - could they have damaged the exhaust system in doing so - leaky exhaust can also give this cde - from what I have read.

Thoughts?

Thanks

!996 Ford Windstar GL 3.8 150,000 miles.

Ok, so about 8 months ago, the Check Engine light would illuminate and stay on until we got the code cleared (more on this later). Now, it's begun flashing at any given moment in neighborhood driving, or sometimes (very rarely) on the highway.

When the Check engine light is flashing, I can physically feel something wrong with the car. It's puttering and running pretty rough. That will only happen for about 30-60 secs, then it will recover. I can also put the car in neutral and rev the engine to recover it. Most times accelerating after a recovery is very sketchy. The gas pedal is pushed almost to the floor, but the car just won't get up and go.

We've taken it to AutoZone, Advanced Auto, and Tire Kingdom and their computers all have read the same thing, Misfires on Cylinder 1 and very rarely 4. There was also a new one "idle speed sensor" today on the first check.

I have replaced what seems like EVERYTHING to do with the ignition system. Plugs, Wires, Coil. Had the Fuel injection cleaned and the induction system (such as air plenum) cleaned. None of this has worked. It still flashes then goes on solid.

The Charging system light was on for a short time, I cleaned the battery contacts and it seemed to go away. We have had the alternator and battery tested more 3 than times, they both show fine under load.

I MADE SURE to gap EACH spark plug to .044 like the Ford Dealership told me when I purchased the plugs.

I did inspect everything that I could think of with the ignition system. The wires that go into the coil, the ignition wires and carefully looked at each plug as I was gapping it.

This was also the second set of plugs I have put on in less than 2 months.

The ABS light goes on at highway speeds.

That's about it.. I am not throwing any more money at this problem until I know exact what it is, or the car dies.

So, please throw me a bone, I need to figure this out, for my own knowledge and pride. I can't let this problem get the best of me. :)

PS....
If there was a wire bad to power the ignition coil, I would expect there to be more cylinders misfiring. But, it's ALWAYS 1 SOMETIMES 4.

Also, there is a distinct smell of gasoline once I leave the car from driving it from time to time.

EDIT: I was thinking about taking the intake plenum off to see if there is some gunk around the EGR ports. Maybe that is a problem or a gasket is cracked.. Either way, it's nice and cheap to do, if not free :)

2001 windstar front hub assembly

I need to replace the front hub assembly on my 2001 windstar. The assembly is the one that bolts in w/ 3 bolts. Is it true that if I remove the lower ball joint that will allow me to slide the whole assembly out far enough that I can the push the axle back thru, allowing me to get to the top bolt? Any tips on how to get this job done would be appreciated.
thanks, in advance

1998 windstar steering sticking

I have 1998 windstar. It has some problem in steering. Steering is sticking near center position to both sides. sometimes when turning wheel from center there is also a clunk sound. I have replaced front strut upper bearings and also installed shim plate as TSB from Ford suggested. Anyone had similar problems? I am afraid it is in rack and pinion unit and it is quite expensive and hard to replace.

Hello, I've ran a search for the possibility that someone may have the information previously answered but I can't seem to find it.

Ive been having overheating issues with my van. So I replaced the tstat, waterpump, Radcap. I had to remove the radiator and the fan to get to the water pump with decent space. I still have issues with overheating so I was wondering if perhaps I put the heater hoses on incorrectly. The only 2 that I could possibly confuse would be the last hookup off the 3 hose junction coming from the heatercore, and the last hose off the 2 hose junction. They hook up into the metal pipes that run down and connect to the radiator. I have a manual but there isn't any diagrams or pictures of any sort showing the way the connections should look.

Ive searched the web to maybe catch a glimpse of a 3.0 aerostar with the hoodup and close enough to see, but I can't seem to find any. My van has powersteering/AC/automatic trans. And I have flushed till the water is clean several times. Usually everytime I end up draining any fluid with replacing a part.

So, my 94 Aerostar runs great but the heater does not get very hot. It runs right around the N in normal in the heat gauge. The thermostat is brand new and the coolant level is good. What could be causing this? Any help would be much appreciated as winter is here.

I still need to take care of the PO171 and 174 codes, but I am also working on the following and just can not seem to get anywhere:

1) Keyless system will not work or program keychain remote.
2) Interior light will not work when doors open and I have no auto lock functions.
3) Daytime running lights do not work
4) I have to keep fuse #8 jumped to fuse #17 or I have no REM finctions.
5) Fuse #15, console power point, does not work at all, but the fuse is fins. Can not locate what this actually does.

I am going out today to re-check fuse box modules and fusesm but are there other modules, fuses or items that are there. I have gone through the book and see "general electronic module" and I assume these are what is in the fuse box? There is also a keyless remote module listed but doesn't give a location. Is this the black box under the dash?

The van runs great, but the MPG is down due to the lean codes and I would love to get the electrical crap fixed.

Thanks for anything that may help!

Hi All,

I am new to this forum and have read some very useful information. Maybe someone can help me with a problem I am having with a clunking noise from the front end of my 2000 Windstar SEL. I will start by saying that I have replaced the outer tie rods due to wear. I also replaced the front struts (Monroe Sensa trac) with the mounting kit and the rear shocks also. The sway bar bushings and end links (AutoZone) were replaced about 2 years ago (7K usage). The van has 99.5K miles and runs well except for the clunking noise when you drive. It does not make any noise while standing still and rocking it up and down.

I read on the forum that I should also check the sub frame bushings and the strut rod bushings. I brought the van to different mechanics to check for the noise and they all say different things. No one mentions the sub frame bushings or the strut rod bushings. One guy even told me that I should replace again the sway bar bushings and end links with OEM.

I am lost as what to do next to get rid of the clunking noise. By the way I haven't gotten a wheel alignment as of yet. I am waiting to get this problem fixed before doing the alignment.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, photos (strut rod bushing loc.) or comments.
