			<description><![CDATA[OK, I have been trying to sell this big block Ford engine for some time. I am positive it's a 429, but the guy who just came to look at it says it's a 460 and declined to purchase. Here are the numbers.

Heads C8VE-E
Block C9VE-B
Rods C8VE-A

I have researched and discovered that there will be a 4U or a 4UA on the crank if it is a 429. It does have the 4U stamping. However, I only discovered all this after he left. Is there any other way to be 100% certain it is a 429? I also read the blocks are identical right down to the bore, but the pistons are different from a 429 to a 460. If this is the case, what would I look for on a piston? I have not pulled one out yet.]]></description>

			<title>429/460 Dilemma (long post) NEED HELP!!!</title>

			<description><![CDATA[Hey guys-- I need some help.  I have a 1987 carburated F-350 1 ton.  It is showing its age oil leaking, low on power etc.  I have a few questions for the 429/460 guru's.  I want to have a motor that is reliable, has a decent idle and torque torque torque!!!
 
#1 -- The shop bill will be around $1400-- that is for micing the crank, cleaning block / heads, boring block, checking bearing clearances, new guides and springs and for the complete engine kit...  sounds a little high to me but its already there... BUT the guy already has a built 429 already there ready to drop in... .30 overbore new EVERYTHING. My question is *the 429 is interally balanced correct*?  My 460 is DEFINATELY exterally balanced, so the flywheel to mate to my heavy duty 4-speed transmission wil not work, so *IS IT SAFE TO "O" BALANCE MY 460 FLYWHEEL AND PUT IT ON THE 429*?
 
# 2 *If I buy the 429, will all of my 1987 accesories fit?* (A/C, power steering, alternator etc.  I was thinking it might different since my 460 has the spacer with balancing weigh behind the damper.
 
# 3 If I stick to building the 460, I have heard that you should buy a       pre-1970 timing chain for it because anything after that installed strait up or "dot to dot" was automatically 4 degrees retarded.  
 
# 4 Should I definately get a "recurved" distributor?  I have heard this is a great way to get a few extra ponies and some extra MPG's out of the HOG!
 
# 5  I have put together a "build sheet" for my 460 if I decide to go that route-- please review and give recommendations. Please remember, this is not a race car, it is a truck that will usually pull 4-5000 lbs.

I replaced my 400m engine in my 1978 Ford F350 with a 460 a few months ago and I've been happy with the results but have an interesting observation.  Not long after he bought the truck new, my dad tore the 400m down and put a RV cam along with an Edelbrock SP2P intake and Holley carb.  It was a major improvement!  One of the biggest differences was the very quick throttle response.  It also towed his fifth wheel much better.  I bought the truck several years ago and replaced the tired 400m with the 460.  It tows my fifth wheel much better (larger trailer than dad's) and like I said, I'm happy with it but I'm very surprised that the throttle response isn't "snappier" like the 400m was.  When under a good load it just pulls and pulls as long as you keep the RPM over 1700 or so, so it's not a lugging engine.  With the Lunati 00096 cam with a Weiand 8012 intake and Holley 700cfm carburator and recurved dizzy, I expected a little more "snap".  It almost has the "feel" of a diesel engine.
