LA Preview: More Powerful Engines Expected When 2011 Ford Mustang Models Debut in LA

Rather than the more traditional venue of Detroit, the Ford Motor Company will use the LA Auto Show to debut its new lineup of 2011 Mustang models. Just last year the car was significantly revised with a modernized exterior and a significantly improved interior that is now well beyond what the competition is offering. There's only one problem, with just mild updates to the engine, both the V6 and V8 are lagging well behind in the horsepower war.

Ford is expected to rectify the situation with the 2011 models, with reports indicating that a new V6 could offer up as much as 300-hp, while a new V8 could deliver 400-hp – with a displacement of 5.0-liters, no less! Expect news of six-speed transmissions as well. The other rumor is that the GT500 will get an aluminum block, helping it shed pounds and improve the car's overall balance.

Ford won't confirm or deny these reports but Ford's global product boss Derrick Kuzak did tell the folks at Autoblog that all questions would be answered at the LA Auto Show in December. Also, when asked about the aluminum-block GT500, Kuzak said, "That's a good thought."

The engine updates are much needed for the Mustang to put it back on top. The car has suffered significantly in sales in 2009, being beaten out by the Camaro for three straight months. While the Mustang is quite capable, even with the less powerful engine, horsepower numbers sell cars. And if the Mustang can offer everything it has now, plus more power and (presumably with a six-speed transmission), better fuel economy, then there's no reason to buy anything else.

AutoGuide's live coverage of the LA Auto Show starts December 2nd.

Leaked: 2011 Ford Mustang Details Slip Out

Ford is set to announce big changes to the 2011 Mustang at the LA Auto Show in just a few weeks time, but thank to someone with access to the company's ordering system, a few details have already slipped out.

Among the details include news that the California Special will return. There will also be an SVT package with 19-inch wheels, an RR spoiler with gurney flap, stripe delete and a 3.73 limited slip rear end. Other details are scarce, but there was a listing for the GT500 Convertible, that included a supercharged 5.4-liter V8 engine. That would mean some sort of EcoBoost V8 is out, but it still leaves open the possibility that the V8 will have an aluminum block, which will help the GT500 lose a bunch of weight where it needs to most.

As for the Mustang GT, it will get a six-speed automatic transmission – although that may still be optional.

Ordering for the new 2011 models will begin on January 18th, but we should know more about the 2011 Mustang revisions once the car's debut at the LA Auto Show on December 2nd.

Report: Ford Planning 10 Focus-Based Vehicles With High Hopes for Compact Segment

Image: http://www.autoguide.com/gallery/d/84816-4/fordgrandcmax---02.jpg

In the future, Ford is looking to "focus" on the compact car segment. The pun here is intended, as Ford has announced plans to launch 10 vehicles in North America based off of the new Focus's architecture. In a recent interview with Ford's marketing boss Jim Farley, the folks at Car & Driver got some insight into these plans.

Along with several obvious Focus variants (like the sedan, as well as a wagon, three and four-door hatchbacks, a coupe and probably both a Ford and Mercury compact crossover), Ford has also announced plans for the new Grand C-Max (pictured above), which will take on cars like the Mazda5. On top of these, Lincoln is likely to get a premium small car along the lines of the C Concept.

Farley outlines Ford's plan as betting on the growing popularity of the C-segment cars, just as Toyota bet on the mid-size D-Segment over the past two decades, with cars like the Camry, Lexus ES and all their crossover spin-offs. He says Ford believes the downsizing of cars has already begun, promoted by the recent recession and will be aided in the future by gas prices that will once again go up.

"I feel that 20 years from now, an Accord or Camry will feel like a late-1970s domestic car and our global products coming to the U.S. will feel a lot like Hondas used to be," said Farley.

That's quite a statement and we don't doubt Ford's plan, but the American automaker certainly doesn't seem ready to give up on larger vehicles with strong products like the Fusion an Taurus. Perhaps, as Farley is Ford's marketing boss, the Focus will be marketed much like Ford's EcoBoost engines, which are continuously touted as fuel-sippers, but are really built for high performance. The Focus, therefore, would help Ford promote a small car image, while continuing to sell big in the big car segments.

Report: Shelby Unveils Supercharged F-150 Super Snake Muscle Truck Concept

Image: http://www.autoguide.com/gallery/d/110607-4/f150supersnake_03.jpg

It's just a concept for now, but Shelby Automobiles Inc., is hoping there's enough interest to go ahead and start building production versions of this muscle truck. Called the F-150 Super Snake Concept, the Shelby-inspired vehicle is based on a 2007 F-150 regular cab and lists extensive modifications to improve handling, styling and power.

For starters, there's a Whipple supercharger kit under the hood, helping the 5.4-liter V8 pump out 475-hp. Handling is helped out by a big set of 22-inch wheels and a suspension that has been lowered by 3-inches. And inside those wheels is a set of Baer six-piston brakes. As for style, the truck gets a complete aero kit, including a new hood. Additional modifications include a Borla exhaust 3:73:1 rear end and a custom interior.

"Carroll Shelby pioneered the muscle truck segment over 20 years ago," said Amy Boylan, president of Shelby Autos. "Our team built this concept F150 Super Snake to see if the public is ready for another high performance Shelby truck. We took the same approach to this project as we do for every Shelby. With its 'look at me' styling, earth shattering power, stop-on-a-dime brakes and go cart-like handling, it's a balanced performance truck that's as desirable to drive as it is to look at."

Shelby hasn't yet confirmed if it will offer this package but we imagine its in the cards. If so, it will be available for the 2003-08 F-150.

Over the past year or so Steve Saleen's new project, SMS Supercars has released high performance versions of the Camaro, Mustang and Challenger. This week at the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) Show, SMS announces the introduction of SMS Superparts, a division of the company that will sell the parts individually through a distribution network.

"We are excited to launch our newest addition to the SMS Supercars family right here at SEMA, where it all happens," said Steve Saleen. "To have a strictly SMS Superparts display was a conscious choice on my part. I wanted to underline the importance of the aftermarket business, the passion of the enthusiasts and the true Steve Saleen fans."

Saleen also included a second announcement, the introduction of the SMS 296 supercharger for the 2005-10 Mustang. This new blower is expected to produce output of 475-hp, with higher output packages reaching all the way to 650-hp.

For photos of the new SMS 296 Supercharger installed on a 2010 Mustang, as well as a Sour Grape Green 2010 SMS 570X Challenger, check out the gallery.

SEMA 2009: Is the Focus RS Here to Tease Us, or Gauge Interest?

No, this isn't a modified show car built specifically for the SEMA Show. It's a factory stock Ford. Called the Focus RS, Ford offers this scalding hot hatch in Europe but has continually denied plans to offer the car in the U.S. But then why would Ford display the car at its booth at the SEMA Show? Are they teasing us, or trying to drum up interest to see if they can in fact sell the car in the U.S.?

We hope it's the latter.

The front-drive Focus RS makes even cars like the MazdaSpeed3 look like toys, with a turbocharged 5-cylinder engine that makes 295-hp and 305 ft-lbs of torque. There's also an impressive suspension setup, along with the obvious rally-inspired aerodynamics and a seriously sporty interior.

Again, Ford has continuously denied bringing a car like this to the U.S., but the last time we heard a denial, the worldwide economy was crumbling. Now that the recovery is well under way and Ford seems to be emerging as a bigger player on the automotive scene, perhaps it's time they revisited the possibility.

After the success of Ford's 2008 Mustang Cobra Jet, Ford announced at the 2009 Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) Show the return of the car for 2010. In a "SEMA Special" silver with a charcoal Cobra Jet graphics package, the new turnkey race car is ready for NHRA competition.

"The 2008 Cobra Jet was a great car, it did everything we wanted it to do," said Brian Wolfe, director, Ford North American Motorsports. "We're really proud of the car, but then again we're always trying to make the next one better. With the 2010 Cobra Jet, we had the luxury of a longer development cycle and the result is absolutely stunning. Where the 2008 Cobra Jet was an extremely potent starting point for NHRA Stock competition, the 2010 will enhance the car further. We are all excited to see the new Cobra Jet in competition."

The new model uses a 425-hp supercharged 5.4-liter V8 direct from the Ford Racing Performance Parts catalog. Ford also plans to make another engine available, with an aluminum block and 475-hp. A six-speed manual transmission (the same found in the ‘08 model) will be standard equipment, however, there will be an option to upgrade to a 5-speed Liberty manual unit or a race-spec auto-box. In addition, the Cobra Jet will get an NHRA certified roll cage and lightweight racing brakes. The car will also get launch control.

Only 50 2010 CJs will be built.

There was no doubt that the focus of Ford's SEMA Show booth was the all-new 2010 Mustang, with a total of nine modified Stangs, plus the all-new Cobra Jet model. Ford originally scheduled eight cars, but it looks like Galpin Auto Sports snuck in a second entry. The cars were built by tuner shops, race shops and even in-house, with most of the cars featuring parts available to the public – rather than one-off custom items made just for the SEMA Show. After all, the Mustang continues to be the most popular car to modify in the world.

First up is the 3dCarbon Mustang, which recreates the "Boy Racer" Mustang that the shop first built back in 2005, based on the previous generation car. Bright red with white stripes, this car takes take the Stang's classic lines and add some wild sport compact-themed aerodynamics. Still, in person it was somewhat underwhelming. What is more impressive, however, are the rest of the car's modifications with a complete Steeda suspension setup, a Brembo brake upgrade and NC Forged three-piece 22-inch wheels.

The only convertible of the bunch is from Galpin Auto Sports and as much as we mocked the Ford Vehicle Personalization Mustang when we first heard of this lineup of cars for SEMA, the Galpin car is our new whipping boy. It's not all bad, with a pretty aggressive widebody conversion although as much as we like the wheels (a set of massive Forgiato rollers), they just don't seem right on a Stang. The real travesty, however, is out back where an overly ornate rear diffuser just makes us nauseous. Under the hood there are 550 ponies thanks to a Ford Racing super pack, and as silly as those wheels might look, the rear 345 tires will be needed with all that power.

In the sheetmetal, the H&R Springs 2010 Mustang is as impressive as Ford's teaser photos led us to believe. The car features a Street Scene aero kit along with an APR rear spoiler and some nice LED lighting. It sits low on an H&R Springs coilover suspension, with upgraded sway bars and some track spacers to push the 20-inch OZ Superleggera III wheels to the far corners of the car. Other highlights include a Vortech supercharger and a Flowmaster stainless steel exhaust.

The Christmas tree loving team at Paul's High Performance have built a beast for low 60 footers and high trap speeds. The car features a big functional hood from Cervinis and custom built rear wing. Under the hood, there's a 4.6-liter Ford V8 with plenty of Ford Racing parts, including new heads and a new valvetrain, cam kit, throttle body and long tube headers. The car also gets a 9-inch rear end with 4:56 gears. Other highlights include the Weld Racing Torq-Thrust Pro wheels and Mickey Thompson drag slicks out back.

One of the most highly anticipated Mustangs debuting at the SEMA Show comes from Steeda Autosports. Teased for months ahead of the event, the Steeda Q Series package is a well-rounded group of modifications designed to deliver improved performance in all areas. The track-tuned, street legal package includes new springs, sway bars, strut tower braces, a bump steer kit and aluminum lower control arms. Other highlights include an exhaust, intake and short throw shifter kit as well as Brembo brakes and Steeda Spyder wheels. And of course, there's the new Steeda Autosports aero kit.

When we first heard about the Street Scene Equipment 2010 Mustang it didn't sound all that special, but in person it's much more impressive - although we could still do without those rear quarter window covers. Otherwise, the car sports a complete aerodynamic package including items like a new grille and hood. Other highlights include a Vortech supercharger, Headman headers, a Magnaflow exhaust, H&R coilover springs and 20-inch Giovanna wheels.

Even more impressive than we had expected is the Vaughn Gittin Jr. RTR-C 2010 Mustang. With a complete carbon fiber body, the car also gets a set of carbon fiber HRE wheels. Named for championship drifter Vaughn Gittin Jr., the car was built by Autosport Dynamics (ASD) in Charlotte, NC and retails for $135,000. Other highlights include a 550-hp Ford Racing Super Pack upgrade under the hood.

In reality the Ford Vehicle Personalization Mustang isn't nearly as bad as Ford's teaser pic has led us to believe. Assembled using Ford Custom Accessories, apart from the swirly side decals and interior design, it's not so bad. In fact, even the gold wheels aren't nearly as obviously horrible as we expected. We do like the carbon black paint, but we'll stop here while we're still in a good mood.

Hurst Performance Vehicles used the 2009 SEMA Show to expand its product lineup significantly with the introduction of Performance Series versions of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang. Both cars appeared in predominantly white livery with black and gold detailing.

The Hurst Performance Series Camaro features a Magnusson Supercharger, Hurst Competition/Plus shifter with a Hard-Drive shift handle and AirSpeed spoiler. The kit also includes an Eibach suspension, Magnaflow exhaust system, Hurst black-chrome forged wheels with BF Goodrich KDW tires and a unique Katzkin leather interior. Output from the Camaro's V8 engine has been raised to 600-hp! Just 50 Performance Edition Camaros will be built.

As for the Performance Series Mustang, it will come with a Roush supercharger, Willwood brakes, Eibach coilovers and sway bars, a Magnaflow exhaust, a new front lip spoiler, 20-inch wheels and BF Goodrich KDW tires. Of course, there will also be a Hurst Competition/Plus manual shifter with a gold anodized Hard-Drive shift handle. A Katzkin leather interior is also a part of the package. Power from the supercharged 4.6-liter V8 is rated at around 435-hp.

"I am very pleased to officially announce that Hurst is once again mixing it up in the middle of the muscle car wars," states Nate Shelton, Chairman of Hurst Performance Vehicles. "Hurst made
history by building some of the most collectible muscle cars ever for Ford, GM and Mopar, and we are doing it again!"

"We have been stunned by the overwhelming success of the Hurst/Hemi-Challenger; collectors and dealers have snapped up every single one that we can build," said Ron Flint, President of Hurst Performance Vehicles. "For the lucky few that step up, a Hurst/Mustang or Hurst/Camaro may prove to be the best investment they've ever made."

Held each year in Las Vegas, Nevada, the SEMA Show is an industry event for the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association.

Tuners and parts suppliers from across the industry and even from the realm of motorsports come to show off their wares, usually displayed on some sort of eye-catching highly-modified vehicle - be it a muscle car, hot rod or sport compact car.

And let's not forget the increasing presence of mainstream manufacturers like Hyundai, Scion, Honda, Ford, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Chrysler and Dodge. Major areas of interest at SEMA include Racing and Performance, Wheels and Tires, as well as Trucks, SUVs and Off-Road vehicles.

As though Ford didn't have enough going on at the 2009 SEMA Show, the automaker today announced two big updates for the amazing F-150 SVT Raptor. First up is official confirmation and performance numbers for the new, larger V8 engine. Possibly the only weak point in the Raptor was its relatively average 320-hp 5.4-liter V8 motor. Now, Ford has said a new 6.2-liter V8 with 411-hp and 434 ft-lbs of torque that will be available starting December 1st. The new, more powerful off-road capable truck will be priced from $41,995.

Possibly more exciting for the true off-road enthusiasts is news that Ford will also offer a new competition-ready FR Raptor XT, which is essentially the same vehicle that ran in the 2008 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, but with the same comfort features of the standard Raptor. It will get the same 6.2-liter V8, but tuned to 500-hp, along with a six-speed automatic transmission and a suspension that allows for 15-inches of front travel and 18-inches of rear travel.

Ford will build just 50 FR Raptor XTs at a price of $99,950 each.

Easy one of the most eye-popping cars at Ford's SEMA Show booth is the Vaughn Gittin Jr. RTR-C 2010 Mustang – and that's saying a lot considering Ford's massive presence at this year's show. With a complete carbon fiber body, all we know is the folks at German tuner Mansory (know for building cars like a full carbon bodied Porsche Cayenne and Aston MArtin DBS) would give this car respect.

Named for championship drifter Vaughn Gittin Jr., the car was built by Autosport Dynamics (ASD) in Charlotte, NC. Along with the full carbon body there is also a set of carbon fiber HRE wheels and even some in-car adjustable shocks.

Only a limited number of these cars will be built and at a cost of $135,000, we don't imagine there's a waiting list.

SEMA 2009: 2011 Ford Super Duty DeWALT Contractor Concept Could be a Transformer

The truck isn't even for sale yet, but Ford shipped one of its new Super Duty pickups to tool maker DeWALT, to build a custom work vehicle for the 2009 SEMA Show. The simply massive truck gets special items like a winch, special cargo compartments on the outside of the truck's bed and even a small crane designed to move heavy cargo (like a generator) into and out of the bed.

It looks more like something that might be in a Transformers movie – which makes it a perfect fit for the SEMA Show.

Along with all these custom goodies, the DeWALT concept also gets everything that will make the 2011 Super Duty the leader in the big truck class, including an all-new 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 with a new 6R140 heavy-duty TorqShift six-speed automatic transmission with Ford's SelectShift function so drivers can choose gears just like on a manual transmission. This new tranny also gets a Tow Haul option with integrated engine exhaust braking.

Another amazing feature is what Ford calls Live Drive PTO (Power Take Off), which allows auxiliary equipment like snowplows or salt spreaders to be powered through the transmission. Ford is the first company to bring this technology over from agricultural machines.

Of course, the Super Duty will also get a long list of Ford's impressive truck technology, like Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control, Trailer Sway Control, Trailer Brake Control and, of course, Ford's AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control.

In addition Ford will offer it's exclusive Ford World Solutions program which now comes with a 4.2-inch LCD screen between the truck's gauges, which will display relevant information to the driver about things like fuel-economy or the status of the fifth wheel hook-up.

*Held each year in Las Vegas, Nevada, the SEMA Show is an industry event for the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association.*

Leaked: 2010 Saleen Mustang S281 Revealed Ahead of SEMA Debut

Image: http://www.autoguide.com/gallery/d/103706-4/4052256061_91d384cfe3_b-1.jpg

Prior to its official SEMA Show debut, several photos of the Saleen S281 version of the 2010 Mustang have leaked onto the net. With all the controversy surrounding the Saleen brand as of late, it's no surprise that this pony car won't be displayed along with the stable of Stangs at Ford's booth. Then again, with the Saleen name still carrying a lot of cache, the Mustang tuner doesn't exactly need to piggy-back.

The S281 2010 Mustang is (arguably) the first full package to come from the new Saleen Performance Vehicles company. Several months back the “new Saleen” did roll out a 435S model, but in many ways it was more a collection of parts than a fully thought out vehicle. Even the company admitted that the 435S was more of a budget-minded performance vehicle.

As for the S281, it promises much more and we have to say the exterior styling is impressive – although we'll take ours without the rear quarter window covers.

And as for the rest of the package, that info didn't leak out with the pics, so we'll have to wait for SEMA to find out more.

Be sure to check back for AutoGuide's 2009 SEMA Show coverage starting November 3rd.
