My friend was driving, pulled up to a stop light and the car died. So he called me. I'm kind of a backyard mechanic. Bear in mind it is about 20 degrees out, so I didn't get into a whole lot today, and figured I'd ask for help. The car cranks, but no start. (he says it has done this before, but it starts back up) It has fuel, it was 2 qts low on oil, the antifreeze reservoir was empty. there is obvious antifreeze leakage and build-up below the front left valve cover. Tomorrow I'll check for spark, but evidence points me toward the head gasket. Any thoughts or input is appreciated.......

A head gasket won't cause stalling like that. How do you know it's getting fuel? Do you hear the injectors and fuel pump come on for a few seconds when the key is turned on? you could spray a shot of starting fluid in the intake and then crank it to see if it starts.

Thanks for the input.... I did try spraying some starting fluid, and no change.

It can also be the PATS system. Try another key.

My 96 Grand Marquis did that. After putting it on a trailer and taking it to the Mercury dealer, the service manager raised the trunk lid and pressed the fuel pump reset button and it cranked right up. It is located under the trunk lining material behind the right rear taillight assembly. Good luck.

I think that re-set button is on the left side for that year,at least is is for '01 and I think they are the same. The manual says it only cuts out after a "substantial jolt" as in a collision. So I would get that fixed or replaced if it cuts out in regular driving.

Sorry for the delay, he towed the car and has given up on it, before I was able to try the suggestions. He has offered to GIVE me the car if I want it to tinker with. Will update as it progresses, we are covered in snow now, so it will be later in the week before we can go look at it.
