02 check light

Son is driving a 01 P71, check light came on for 02 sensor issues. He took it to a parts shop and had CEL run. Other then it is for a 02 I don't know which one, which bank, etc.
The car only has 90k on it. I have read that this light could be triggered by the car having other dirty/bad parts. Bad plugs, dirty MAF, IAC.
What things should I look at first before messing with the 02's?

Re: 02 check light

It really depends on the code to tell what the cause may be. If the original one can't, have another parts store check codes and tell him what the number is.

Re: 02 check light

It is a good idea to have the trouble codes that are set on the vehicle's computer, retrieved from it. Most auto parts store will offer this scan for free. These codes explain what circuit is sensing the problem, but not exactly what the problem is. So, if your get a code for, random misfire detected, it doesn't mean the spark plugs, and wires are at fault. It could be caused by a vacuum leak or even a coolant leak. The recovered code will most likely be for rich exhaust or lean random misfire from the oxygen sensor. An O2 sensor may not be the problem. Ford uses a throttle air bypass valve/TABV also known as an Idle Air control/IAC valve. This is a computerized choke that can get carbon built up causing it to stick open or closed. When it sticks open, it will cause a lean misfire and when it sticks closed it will cause the engine to load up on fuel, which can make the engine hesitate on acceleration and a rich mixture. This TABV/IAC is a serviceable part that can be removed, cleaned with a throttle-body cleaner that is O2 sensor safe and reinstalled using a new base gasket.

At 90K, it's not uncommon to have to change an O2 sensor. Most diagnostics can be caused by several different issues, Typically, fouled plugs would cause other diagnostics to appear, such as misfire or too rich. A too lean can be the result of low fuel pressure or a vacuum leak. If it's a too lean on a single sensor, the problem is probably the sensor (but not always). If both banks are showing lean, I'd e looking at fuel pressure and vacuum, both could also be an issue with the age of the car.
