I have a very well maintained 2002 Ford CVPI with 170000 miles that I purchased from a small town force about 6 months ago. It started loosing power on a trip last week. It was running fine and then it just would not pull 30 mph flat out. It still idles good and is not missing. The mechanic at the shop where it is being worked on has tried all the obvious things, fuel filter and pressure are correct, installed all new coils, maf, and tps. Disconnected the cats to see if that helped. It is still the same. It does not kick any codes out either. We are stumped. It will drive normally for 5 min or so then just will not rev in gear. Put in neutral and it will rev some but not in gear. And it idles normally at all times. Please help us!! Thanks in advance!!

It's possible the fuel pump is going out. Did he do a fuel pump volume test? It should put out about 1qt. in 30 sec.

No we have not done a volume test. We have tested pressure hot and cold and its within specs.

I think we may have found our culprit. If you unplug the fuel pressure regulator it runs fine at all speeds. Plug the vacuum line back in, it falls on its face. I took a screw driver and whacked it a few times and now it is running right with it plugged in. Should I replace it, or is this a symptom of another problem?

No symptom of another problem. Replace it and you should be set. Good job finding that.
