Hi all, I hope you can help.

I pulled the car half out of the garage on a level position to check a couple of fuses. All was and is good.

I started the car back up and it will not leave park. I've jiggled the steering coloumn, the shifting column, moved the car back and forth a litttle bit while doing all of the above. I tried pressing the brake for seveal seconds and I've used both sets of key.

The car runs fine other than I can shift. Any suggestions?

Recheck fuses 26, 28, and 31 under the dash and fuse1 and 14 under the hood. Are the brake lights coming on?

Is there an interlock that I've accidently engaged? Is there a manual reset anywhere. I'd take it to the mechanic but I live in the sticks.

Yes all the brake lights are on

Have you checked those fuses? The ones under the hood are hard to tell if they are okay.

Dont know if this is any use with the problem ,

" Your vehicle is equipped with a Brake Shift Interlock safety feature. This feature prevents the gearshift from being moved from the P (Park) position until the brake pedal is depressed. This feature is active when the ignition is in the ON position. If the gearshift lever CANNOT be moved from P (Park) with the brake pedal depressed:
1. Turn the engine off and remove the ignition
key.
2. Apply parking brake.
3. Reinsert the ignition key and turn clockwise
to the first position (OFF).
4. Depress the brake pedal, move the gearshift
lever to N (Neutral) and start the engine.
If you need to shift out of P (Park) by using the alternate procedure described above, it is possible that a fuse has blown and that your brakelamps may also not be functional. Please refer to the chapter titled Servicing Your Grand Marquis in this Owner Guide for instructions on checking and replacing fuses.
Also it could be the actual “brake light switch” is not functioning or has come loose and is out of asjustment. Have some one stand behind the car to see if the brake lights come on, if not check the fuse and switch "

Thanks Burt and Logan. I treid all sugesstion.

I put a meter to the relays. Should they be normally open with everything off? I also gave them all a love tap.

I tried Logans sequence without success. But I did go under the steering column and found a switch that will allow me to move the gear shift but as soon as I put it in park it locks until I override it.

I did notice that the fog lamps are out. It must be a relay. I'll let youknow if it works

That sequence that R.S.LOGAN mentioned doesn't work on the newer cars. I think it changed in 2005.
