I bought a 1985 Grand Marquis in July and it's the first car I've had that isn't carbureted. It has a 302 V8 with CFI (Central Fuel Injection). I'm having a hard time starting it when it's hot, but before I figure out what's wrong with the car, I'd like to know what procedure I'm supposed to follow when starting it. There's a spring like the one on an automatic choke, but it appears to be only attached to the throttle. Should I depress the gas pedal, so that the fast idle is set? I don't see an accellerator pump, so I assume that pumping the gas is a waste of time. If I think I've flooded the engine, do I hold the gas pedal to the floor like I do with a carbureted car?
Also, am I supposed to check the power steering fluid level with the engine running or off?
Finally, is there a temperature gauge or idiot light? I've busted a few hoses and I smelled antifreeze before any lights came on. I live in southern Arizona, and it just makes sense to know when the engine is getting hot.

The owners manual in my 84 says to turn on the key, then pump the throttle once, only when the engine is cold, if it's been sitting for a few days pump it two or three times. This is the first fuel injected car I've ever had that you had to do that. If the engine is warm, don't pump it. It does have a mechanical fast-idle device.
check power steering fluid with the engine off, or have band aids ready.
I don't know about the idiot light in your car, but the 84 has one light to indicate oil pressure and temp...it just says "engine". that's all I know.

Thanks for your reply (I just noticed it). Just wondering--it doesn't look to me like there's an accellerator pump on the central fuel ignition, so pumping the gas pedal would only set the idel speed. What good is it to pump the gas pedal 2 or 3 times, instead of just once?

The reason to press the throttle is to set the higher speed cam when it's cold. Your original post was on target.
