I just got a 1985 Grand Marquis from an expired relative. The starter keeps running even after I turn off the key. I have replaced the starter (which tested bad) and a new solenoid. It did it again and the cable running to the starter gets very hot. I have heard some auto parts sell an inferior solenoid. Any thoughts? Thanks

Could be. When things stick on or off, I gently tap with a hammer to see if they unstick. What happens when you pull the small wire off? If the starter stops turning when you pull that small wire off the relay, it could be a problem in the key tumbler. If it keeps going, I'd guess the solenoid is shitty.

Make sure you have a way to keep the starter from cranking all the time when you do these tests or you'll end up buying a new starter again.

I guess that's a perk of being at the parts store ALL the time... they warranty out stuff that they shouldn't... like a perfectly good power steering pump that I warranteed out because I wanted a new one when I dropped in the new motor.
