1990 Ford Crown Victoria Wagon valve cover gasket replacement

Hi,
Just installed new Felpro cork valve cover gaskets using the Permatex/4 oz. brush-top can High Tack gasket sealant. One side is leaking oil again.I put the gasket sealant over the entire gasket, should that be done?
I noticed on the cork gaskets, they had one side that had a blue stripe and the other side didn't. Is there any special way these cork gaskets have to be put on, no instructions came in the box?
Also, are there better gaskets than the cork ones that can be used? Do all gaskets need sealant?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

the best gaskets for the valve covers are the Fel-Pro permadry gaskets... you make sure the valve cover and area that valve cover connects to is dry and clean. these gaskets you do not use sealant on. the gaskets will cost about $25-$30 but will not leak if installed right. i know these 5.0L cars and those are all i trust for the valve cover gaskets...

87_Crown_Vic knows those cars better than anyone I know so I'd trust what he says as the best answer you could get.

Re: 1990 Ford Crown Victoria Wagon valve cover gasket replacement

I use cork gaskets and never had one leak.
I stick the gaskets to the covers first with RTV, let them dry, then clean up the surfaces on the heads and install them.
Overtightening is a major reason for leaks due to distorted flanges.
I never use a ratchet for them. Only hand tight with a screwdriver and socket.
