1992 Grand Marquis "ticking noise"

I did a search of the archives but turned up nothing, so maybe someone here can help.
I purchased a 92 Grand Marquis last week, and it ran great for the first 600 miles I drove it. But last night it started making a strange ticking noise from the engine compartment. It doesn't happen when you are idling or decelerating--only when you accelerate. When I leave a stop light, I hear a slow tick..tick..tick...and I can feel it through the pedal. The engine also runs rough when getting up to speed.
The check engine light is off. But before this problem started, the light would come on and stay on after about 5 minutes of driving. Idle has always been a little rough, and there have been 2 occassions where the car died at a stop sign. The car has 183K miles on it, but appears to have been well maintained.
Any ideas?
