I got the EGR replaced along with the EGR tube that they broke. I now have an annoying exhaust leak that comes when the car is under load and cold, but goes away when its warm. Hopefully they just need to tighten something. as for performance, the car runs 95% better than before all this happend. I still get a slight miss when idleing and under acceleration, but it only bucks and/jerks once maybe twice per trip. I suspect that the wires need to be replaced, because thats what cured it before. I have a set of xact wires now, and have been thouroughly dissapointed with them. Since day one they never fit correctly and since then I have had to remove them atleast five times. I would say I broke them and due to their bad build quality I dont think the insulation is working very well. I paln to replace them with a set from NAPA that have been highly reccomended on crownvic.net. apparently they have a lifetime warranty and have outstanding build quality for $75. check them out. I also deleted the codes from the computer and havent had the check engine light come back on. HURRAY!!!
I still want to know how to check a coil for bad/good because I want to fix my car, but cant afford to replace both the coils and wires. any input?
i have a '93 grand marquis with similar problems. please bear with me as i'm not super-knowledgeable with this stuff.
when it is cold, it bucks and jumps and hesitates when i hit the gas. my mechanic told me there is some temperature sensor that is malfunctioning. he said it thinks the engine is warmer than it really is, so not enough fuel is being sent. is that what the TPS is?
somebody earlier in this post said the '92-94 CVs had bad valve seals, which necessitates a new EGR. is this also true of the GMs?
in addition to the cold running problems, my check engine light comes on when i'm driving at highway speeds (70-90). i don't feel any hesitation or anything, but i'm guessing that whatever is triggering the check engine light is probably what is limiting me to 16-17 mpg.
i haven't been able to borrow a code reader, so i don't have any really good info about the check engine light other than the typical situations where it comes on (highway speeds).
should i go through the same steps as this guy? i'm not in any position to be doing this stuff on my own, so i would be bringing it to a shop. what exactly should i be telling the mechanic?
I decided to let the car work itself out for a week, and there has been no jerking or bucking of any kind since the last update. I don't know why, but my gas milage has also increased quite a bit. I'm pretty happy that its "fixed" for now, but I know wires are going to be replaced in the summer when it gets warmer. I also have to try to figure out how to take the throttle body elbow off. Does anyone know how to take the throttle cable off my throttlebody?
I really appreciate all the help I have recieved!! Thanks to all.

goodluck going to autozone, they usually dont have the code reader for OBD1 systems. If I were you, I would check out amazon.com for a code reader like mine. I think it works great!!
or you could take your car to a dealer for a full pinpoint diagnostic. it will cost you a couple hundred dollars, but they should be able to tell you exactly whats wrong. then you could decide if you want to try to fix it yourself...
Disconnect the throttle cable at the throttle body throttle lever by inserting a screwdriver between the throttle cable and the throttle lever and giving a twist.
I've been to Autozone when I was in Portland, Or. with a friends car and they read the codes on an OBD1. They don't know what the codes are for but they can be looked up. It is better to have your own reader though. That way when you fix problems, you can see if the codes are gone.
