confused 1996 grand marquis tranny shutter at 55 - 60 MPH

This vehicle has 24K miles is a 1996 Grand marquis v8 4.6L motor. The car will shutter at 55 to 60 and you have to accelerate to stop the shutter. We replaced the MAF and the local shop put trans cleaner and fuel injection cleaner to help remedy. No trouble codes and no check engine light. The vehicle has new tires now and it still shutters at 55 to 60 intermittenly. this is very fustrating since the car runs great for this mishap. a lot of people have mentioned TPS and O2's as well. any ideas or suggestions

You might want to check your coils and plugs. Sounds like a long shot but I have had similar problems with my 2000 and both times it was the coils. When under gentle acceleration at speed, the car would shudder and seemingly misfire. Mostly it feels like a lurch in the drivetrain.

At its worst it was accompanied with a momentarily soaring temp gauge and even complete engine shut down at highway speeds. New after market coils was the answer... even the dealer mech. could not diagnose it.

Just went through this issue again and found that one or more of the coils was shorting to the head through the boot. Careful reinstallation seems to have corrected it.

Regards

At the dealer here, getting a transmission fluid flush and transfusion. The dealer recommended this first and if the shudder continues then they suspect a locking up torque converter.

I am skeptical, as my issue seems to only happen when the vehicle is wet / cold.

My next investigation will be the transmission shift sensor connection. I figure if the wire/connector is corroded at the transmission, and conditions are wet, then the signal could be comrimised to the ICM and TCM.

On another note, I am surprised by the lack of knowledgeable responses and contributions on this forum. It is rather lacking.

Re: 1996 grand marquis tranny shutter at 55 - 60 MPH

Okay so I get the transmission fluid drained and replaced at the dealer.... Just under $200.00...

It runs smoooth for about 3 miles (until it is hot) now the transmission shudder is worse then ever! Just horrible....

So I call for a quote on having the Torque Converter replaced.... while I am waiting for the return call I drop into an AAMMCO transmission shop here in Fort Myers... Anthony is the man... says he will give me a miracle and wont charge me a cent. If it works then I am to come back and drop him $50 sometime.

He puts a 3oz (my guess) red tube of Dr. Trannys' Shudder Fixx into my transmission filler spout. Like magic, the shudder is gone.

THANK YOU ANTHONY! As I am driving out of his shop the dealer calls back.... for $990 they will happily replace my torque converter. ( I guess they know I am on vacation here!) NO THANKS COCONUT POINT FORD!

It is only 2.6 oz, the AAMMCO guy did not drain anything, just put it in the fill tube.

So we drive home and around 1500 miles into the trip, guess what, the shudder is back. I will try one more tube of this stuff, then if it doesnt work, I guess it is time for a new torque converter.

Hi has nothing to do with your torque converter it is yourvalve body it needs to be taken out and new valve put in it i have a 97 and it did the same thing i am also into trans work. If you keep driving it like that you will screw the tranny and the torque converter. The valve body can be taken out easy in les than 30 min just need to drop the pan this is not a job you can do cause of the need for the reamer tools and all tranny shops should have them. This is a big cause in most of the ford trannies 5r55e s n etc and if you get it looked after when it starts you will save yourselve the cost of a compleat rebuild in canada here the cost is around 800 to 900 to do the job and dont ever let anybody flush your tranny cause in most cases you will be putting a tranny in the care in a couple of months.

hope this helps
