2001 Gran Marquis shifting problem - Ford Forums

I have a 2001 Gran Marquis with 105,000 miles. It has begun shifting very roughly. It feels like it is slipping. If you give it more gas, it shifts through and does OK at high speed on flat roads. I am thinking it must be the transmission, but want to rule out anything else first(fuel, ignition etc.). Does anyone have any ideas on where to start? Could the fuel filter being plugged give these symptons?

If it shifts on flat roads it might be the torque converter thats gone. I'd try a transmission fluid and filter change just to see if that helps at all if you haven't had one done recently. If anything else it's the cheapest way to diagnose. If the shop finds any metal particles in the fluid it'll be time for a rebuild.
