Re: 2001 Grand Marquis stalled but started next day

Well, they ran the car for a total of 3 hours, including some driving on the highways, and it's running fine. I've having it tuned up since it has 82K on it and probably can use it, which hopefully will stop the problems on upgrades. Otherwise it looks like I'm going to be driving this until it happens again....but I'm going to be nervous about taking it on long trips. Other than just replacing the fuel pump and cleaning out the gas tank, which will be costly and may not fix the problem anyway, I don't know what the alternatives are.

Re: 2001 Grand Marquis stalled but started next day

I've driven the car for 1 day now. While it runs a lot better due to the tuneup, it still jerks a bit at the mid-speeds or on slight inclines, 40-50 mph. That may or may not have anything to do with the stall. I found someone on this site who had the exact same problem with an earlier model, but the thread doesn't come to a final conclusion.

The car i that post had a distributor and yours doesn't. You never mentioned if you replaced the fuel filter and if it was plugged.

Re: 2001 Grand Marquis stalled but started next day

The fuel filter was replaced along with the tune-up....no mention about it being plugged or not. It's definately not a problem at sustained high speeds. My regular mechanic is going to take a look at it on Monday. Ruling things out would be a plus. Would letting a transmission outfit test it help at all? It doesn't feel like a slip but maybe something in the gears isn't working properly at mid speeds.

I don't think a transmission place is the place to go. When the engine doesn't run right, the trans will get the wong signal and won't work right. I think it's the engine running improperly.

Yeah, a bad misfire will cause transmission like symptoms.

Yeah - my mechanic will take a look at other items under the hood. The tune-up has helped, and it seems now that the jerking on the uphills is only happening when the engine is cold. A definate improvement.

Re: 2001 Grand Marquis stalled but started next day

Well, the engine got a clean bill of health...everything is working to perfection. The mechanic took the car for a drive and felt the jerking going on between 45 and 50 mph and threw the O/D switch...and that stopped it. I've tried that the past 2 days and sure enough it stops the problem, although I can't leave that on while I'm on the highway. It's not so bad, so I suppose I'll live with it. Still nothing to explain the highway stall....fuel pressure is right where it's suppose to be.

Re: 2001 Grand Marquis stalled but started next day

I'm this continuing saga, the EGR code is back. Perhaps some of the jerking issue has to do with carbon buildup. Since the valve and sensor are new my mechanic wants to remove the exhaust manifold and clean it out. Does that sound like the proper move to make next to deal with EGR code issues? Sounds like he's guessing, but how else can you isolate a problem in this system?
