Re: 2001 Grand Marquis stalled but started next day

"Clean out the exhaust manifold".... could it be that dirty?! But I have read EGR value causing transmission problems.

I thought your mechanic diagnosis the problem; Overdrive going out.

5 years ago I bought a State Trooper Caprice that had the same overdrive problem. On those cars all you had to do was unplug the computer wire harness from the transmission.

Well, it seems everything is a guess, but as long as the EGR code is showing that needs to be addressed before going back to the jerking problem.

Go over to Rockauto.com and pick up a EGR value, they're not expensive.

I replaced the EGR value and sensor this past summer. The code cleared for a couple of weeks but came back.

hmmm, wonder where all this carbon is coming from... Do your car burn oil/smoke?

What weight oil you use?

Car does not burn oil or smoke at all. I use 10W oil in summer and sometimes go to 5W in winter, but it had a slight ticking sound when I bought it 4 years ago which disappeared when I switched to 10W.

This issue doesn't necessarily have to do with carbon, does it? Could the converter be bad? What else throws an EGR code besides the valve and sensor?

Faulty DPF sensor would throw a EGR code.

A bad converter(clogged) would rob your car of power and cause overheating issues.

Re: 2001 Grand Marquis stalled but started next day

Still wrestling with the same issues. Now I have 2 mechanics scratching their heads - one wants to send it to a transmission place the other thinks I may need a fuel pump. While I debate this I have noticed another possible clue: It seems that the jerking issue doesn't happen with a full tank of gas but starts becoming an issue at about 1/2 tank and gets worse as the tank empties. First I thought it was just coincidental but this is now the 3rd tank that I've watched it happen. Any thoughts about what may be occuring inside that tank beginning at 1/2 full? Is it possible that there's some water in there or something else that's interfering with a good gas supply when the tank is approaching the bottom half?

One more question - if I go with a new fuel pump, what's recommended? Prices are all over the place out there.

Re: 2001 Grand Marquis stalled but started next day

Hi Bob.
Been reading about your problem.
I've had a couple of problems on vehicles exhibiting stalling/rough running at about 1/2 to 1/4 tank. All turned out to be a perished pipe in the tank near the pump. One was joining the pump to the outlet on top of the tank. The small splits/holes were causing a slight lack of pressure when fuel levels dropped.
May be worth a look before expensive fuel pumps are replaced.

Good luck.
Andy.
