2002 Crown Vic LX shocks help

Hi everyone, My car is a 2002 CV LX not the sport but the regular LX model. Springs are soft and I want to make the car firmer as it bottoms out over parking lot humps and. It also bottoms out on the freeway through dips in the road depending on speed. I really don't want to change the springs. I've tried and the Moogs that I bought made the car too tall and extremely stiff. So stiff that there was no spring action at all just the car bouncing on the tires. Budget is tight so if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking for a firm normal ride, so which shocks would you guys recommend? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you should change the springs as well, but for shocks, Gabriels seem to be pretty reliable in my experience and reasonably priced.

Re: 2002 Crown Vic LX shocks help

You are somewhat limited with shock selection if you have rear air springs, but KYB gas adjust shocks (set on firm, front and rear) firmed up the handling on my '02 HPP Gran Marquis. The KYB's will also help prevent bottoming.

P 71 springs and sway bars (expensive new, but check the bone yard) will really make a difference, but use new KYB's along with the springs. You can really improve the handling on a Panther chassis car with these mods. They stop the sloppy wallowing feel and seem to make the car track better at freeway speeds. Experience has taught me that cheap shocks are a waste of money.

(Sorry to chime in so late to this post, I have been in an area with limited e mail access for over a month)

Re: 2002 Crown Vic LX shocks help

Just got my first Vic LX running good this week . It certainly can give one a feeling of vertigo . No where near the handling of my 2000 Saab 9-5 Wagon . I guess air ride is not the best for handling or it would have been installed on p71 cars for the safety of our officers . I bet an air bag would behave similar to a coil spring if pumped up to correct ride height on a piece of level ground and kept at that pressure with a shut off valve . Why change to coils if air bags are not leaking ?

Make sure that the ride height is properly set on air spring equipped cars. An inch too high can make the difference between a "tail wagger" and stability. Non HPP CV/GM do not handle well, but an HPP (larger tires, stiffer springs, sway bars, and stiffer shock compression and rebound) make a world of difference. Do not try to adjust an air spring car without jack stands!
