If im correct, my '88 crown vic has 4 catalytic converters. What was ford thinking? I dont think and extra 2 cats is gonna make that much of a difference to our environment, but maybe im wrong. Anyways, I was wondering if I ripped the 2 off that are on the intermediate pipe, if that would signifigantly change my readings when I go for aircare. Suggestions please! I really want a throaty sounding V8, its already straight piped but I dont think its loud enough. Thanks.

Are you suggesting your 88 can already pass emissions? I know mine fails Ontario limits each and every year except for the time the exhaust rusted and fell off the car - New everything 3 weeks before the test got it to pass.

It's not uncommon for some vehicles to have 4 catalytic converters. Lucky for me, the '85 I had only had two. If your '88 had 4 catalytic converters when new, they were there to meet emission requirements for 1988. If you pull off the "extras" I can't see you passing emissions in any state or province. If you lived in Ontario, this would be your last year for testing anyway, and you could always pull them off after a "clean bill of health".

It's also not uncommon for some vehicles to have two extra resonators (essentially more mufflers) to keep things quiet.

I would pull those 4 cats off and replace them with 2 magnaflow high flow cats, tell the muffler guy to install the new cats as close to the header as possible because the higher the exhaust temp the better the cat works.

Yes, it has 4 cats. It also takes away hp. Just gut them all..

chances are its two cats and two resonatiors, my 2001 P-71 has the same thing, so get rid of the resonatiors and get two high flow cats and some good mufflers and you will like it!

No, it has four catalytic converters. Panthers up to '85 had two, '86 and newer had four. I suppose you could get a pair of downpipes from an '85 or older, though it's hard to say what the condition of them would be.
