92 Vic, shifting problems - advice please!!

Recently I accerated hard in my crown vic and began having problems. My vic would only accelerate to 40mph and then stop and slowly decelerate to 30 mph before it would pick up again. I could rev the engine with no affect whatsoever on the tranny-while it decelerated. When I stopped and looked under the hood, I immediately saw that a cable(think its shift cable-had a spring) had come off the throttle arm/lever, the rubber bushing/grommet broke in half. Well, I put a new bushing on and remounted the cable, and I'm still having the same exact problems with shifting. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or similar experience, anything at all. I appreciate any replies or support, thank you all, bye now.

From my experiance with those 92s is if the tranny kick down came off and you just slapped it back on then it is not adjusted right and can burn the passing gear right out of the tranny. When you hit the gas hard your revving in 1st gear, passing is second gear. 1st will only go about 40-50 MPH at full MPH max, second 80-90 max and overdrive 90-135 (my 87 is modified and tops at 135 MPH). You should get it too a tranny shop cause some of them will check it cheap or for free. Over here in michigan a tranny rebuild for a 1979-1993 vic is $1500 (Ya wow), for a tranny replace is $700 (better price).

I had the same problem in Wilkes-Barrie Pennsylvania with my Ford Windstar and I had to replace the whole transmission and it took 4 days to get it fixed. That the only reason I don't really like Ford (in Quebec (where I live)) (not good mechanic check ups)

I heard that you moded your 87 "BlueSteel" do you think you can help me find kits for my 92? If so post your reply to Crown Victoria Mods

Dumb question but here it goes . Have you checked you trany oil level / color ? I had an 85 Lincoln Town Car that did that too but i pulled a trailer with it about 80 % of the time and the trany was just getting worn out . If the car was purchased used , ( or new ) i would first start by having it serviced ( oil / filter ) , have the torque converter checked ( i don't know how that is done though ) and if you do trailer with this car , a HEAVY DUTY trany cooler . Alos , Take a GOOD look at the trany oil in there now . If it's still nice and red , it should be ok BUT , if it's either dark or almost brown , that would indicate a burning of the oil and as far as i know , that then means words like either replace or re-build .
