I need to change a tranny in my mothers 93 crown vic police interceptor. Can I put a regular overdrive transmission out of a civilian car in it. I've been told that the nose cone is longer on a CVPI, if so, couldn't I just take the one of old tranny and attach it to new tranny? What about torque converters, drive shafts? Any other problems? Thanks in advance.
transmissions are the same, from what I can remember. at the very worst you would have to swap extension housings if yours is longer than the one on the replacement trans. its fairly easy, remove the 6 bolts and swap the housings. A new gasket is a good idea.
save yourself some headache and replace MLPS when you swap the transmissions. 92-95 cars had problems with getting water in the connector and shorting the sensor out.
Like 88grandmarq said, you can swap the extension housings. Some police models used a longer extension housing and shorter driveshaft, but it's hard to say if you got one of those. I'm pretty sure they weren't doing it yet in '93, but if they were, it's not that big of a deal- just swap the extension housing and output shaft from the old transmission into the new one.
Thanks for the info. I just priced a rebuild kit for the tranny, $210, seems like a better choice than swapping in a junkyard nonpolice tranny. Is it difficult to rebuild that tranny, any special tools? What do you all think?
Yes, you need all sorts of special tools. specifically special slide hammers to remove the front pump from the case. then you need a special tool to compress the piston in the 3 clutch packs and special tools to protect the new seals (lip seal protectors) when you re-assemble the piston and clutch pack. there are several other tools needed if you replace any case bushings and tools to set the end play on the assembly.
