94 Grand Marquis LS - What transmission does it have?

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this forum and just bought a 1994 Grand Marquis LS in excellent Condition. The engine has 134000 miles on it but still runs smoothly.
The transmission feels a bit too smooth and I don't know if it is slipping or if it is normal for this type of car.

Do you guys know what type of transmission the 1994 Grand Marquis came with? I know they switched to the more durable 4R70W transmission in 1995 but I don't know what type they used in 94? My guess it's a standard AODE
transmission 4 speed automatic. Is that a durable transmission?

Also what other items should I look for as far as potential problems or replacements that I should check?

Any advice and help will be greatly appreciated.

I'm fairly certain they went to the 4R70W when they switched to the Modular motor in 1992...

Re: 94 Grand Marquis LS - What transmission does it have?

According to Edmunds history of the Grand Marquis they didn't change the tranny until the 1995 Model. What they didn't say is what tranny was in there prior to the 4R70W. I had the 4R70W in my 2000 Mustang and it is a decent transmission except for the overdrive. It is it's archilles heel.
Well, I am picking the car up tomorrow from Illinois so I will check it out and see what the pan looks like.
