95 Grand Marquis (weird overdrive problem)

Hello,

I just have one quick question with my car..

although this doesn't happen all the time it kinda does it randomly i think... when im driving it the overdrive off light on the dash will start blinking.... it runs perfectly fine(seems to have a little bit more power - but im not sure) the only problem that seem to arise when this happens is that when im stoping it shifts down kinda hard(This only happens for one gear... im thinking down shifting from 2nd but im not sure) and when in accelerating around the same time. it just seems like a hard shift (up/down)....

is this normal for overdrive and what causes the trans. to do this..

by the way its a automatic trans.

When it's flashing it means a sensor problem. If you go to an AutoZone, they may be able to get a fault code. They don't charge for the test. Then let us know what code or codes you get.

Re: 95 Grand Marquis (weird overdrive problem)

The ECU isn't throwing up any codes...

by the flashing light this is what i mean by it..

on my dashboard (i have the digital dash) towards the top near the information (trips, miles till fill up, MPG, ect.) there is a light when ever i push the overdrive button or anything that says OVERDRIVE OFF (but when i push the button its solid it doesnt flash) but with the above it flashes...

Not sure if this info is needed but.... when i push the button when its flashing it will shift hard once then drive fast... hit it again... and it shits hard again...

Re: 95 Grand Marquis (weird overdrive problem)

There is a transmission code set. Maybe the scanner that was used doesn't check for trans. codes. This is from your car owners manual.

This light tells you that the Transmission Control
Switch (TCS) on the gearshift lever has been
pushed. When the light is on, the transmission
will not shift into overdrive. Depressing the
button on the shifter will return the vehicle to
“overdrive on” mode. The transmission will be
in the “overdrive on” mode when the vehicle is
started even if the O/D OFF mode was selected
when the vehicle was last shut off.

NOTE: If the light does not come on when the
TCS is depressed or if the light flashes
when you are driving, have your
vehicle serviced at the first
opportunity. If this condition persists,
damage could occur to the transmission.

That's because they don't know it has OBD2. Not all 95s had OBD2. It connects under the dash below the shift lever area.

Re: 95 Grand Marquis (weird overdrive problem)

well they couldn't find a code... so i was talking to the guy and he said my car could be trying to tell me that there is something funky with the pressure or somthing like that....

so he told me that i should try changing the oil/filter and see if that removes the flashing light....

what do you think

Re: 95 Grand Marquis (weird overdrive problem)

Did they say their reader can pick up trans codes? Either way, if the trans hasn't been serviced in awhile, it would be a good thing to do. The other thought is that if there is a part in the trans pan has to be changed, the oil will be drained again. If you know of a reputable shop that can check the code for sure, that might be a good idea.

Since it's random, a trans service may fix it. That model has a drain plug in the torque convertor that can be drained also. It takes about 10½ quarts to fill it then.
