1999 Mercury Grand Marquis:
Hazard flashers suddenly stopped working.

--> It's NOT the fuse! <--

I THINK the problem lies with the switch/button-- If I hold the button in-between the "on" and "off" positions, they flash.

All turn signals/bulbs are in proper working order.

Is the switch replaceable? (I already know that it's kind of risky working in/on the steering column, because of the airbag);

*PS In case you're wondering: Yes... It IS somewhat more important for me than the average driver that I have the flashers working because I use the car in my part-time job, blocking/directing traffic, for various private events. It's not ABSOLUTELY necessary b/c I have other flashing lights (strobes & LED's), but I'd like to have them working, if at all possible.

The switch is very easy to replace. The steering wheel doesn't have to be removed. I've changed them in 20 min. You pull the column covers, top and bottom and there are 2 torx screws holding it on from the side.

If you spray electrical contact cleaner down around the hazard button and operate it and the turn signal lever a few times, they usually will work for awhile.
