99 Grand Marquis Steering Problem

I have been searching this and other forums for information on a steering problem. My son's 99 Grand Marquis seems to bind when turning left or right in two specific spots. (one to the left and one to the right)

I think he needs a new steering gearbox. Do you agree? Is this hard to change? Where can I find some instructions or information? Where is the best place to buy a new gearbox?

Thanks in advance,

Doug

It could be the gearbox but you should find out for sure. One thing you could do is raise the front, (Use jack stands), and turn the wheel with the engine off and see if it still does. Then remove the linkage from the arm on the box to ssee if it still does to make sure its not i the linkage. Try both running and off to test. If it still does it with the linkage off, you will need to replace it.

Check our web sponsors in the forum and see what tehy have to offer for what ever you need.

Re: 99 Grand Marquis Steering Problem

Thanks,

I will check it out tomorrow. Replacing the steering box looks like a big job. Not sure if I want to tackle it.

It's not to bad but when you remove the upper shaft, you have to make sure to lock it staight ahead. If not, when the steering wheel is turned, it can break the clockspring in the steering column. They haven't been known to have gear box problems. Linkage problems are the usual culprit.

Re: 99 Grand Marquis Steering Problem

I jacked it up and it acts the same, binding in the same place in both directions.

Which one is the "upper shaft"? Now that I look closer, I think I can change it myself, assuming I can line everything back up.

Autozone has smoe info but says it is not necessary to remove the pitman arm. Do you then replace it after getting the steering gearbox out?

Thanks in advance,

BD

The upper shaft is the one that goes into the passengers compartment. Now if you remove the linkage from the pitman arm and try the same thing, that will rule out the lower linkage.

Re: 99 Grand Marquis Steering Problem

After wondering if I could tackle the job, I finally just went ahead and replaced the Steering gear.

The steering gear turned out to be the problem. Replacing it wasn't too bad and would be easy the 2nd time around. Experience is something you have, right after you need it.

The important piece is to keep everything lined up and don't turn the steering wheel after it is disconnect. Turning it to far can screw things up and even set off the air bag.

I don't know how much labor I saved by doing it myself. Does anybody know what they charge for this type of job?

It steers smooth now, although a little stiff.

Thanks,

BD

Re: 99 Grand Marquis Steering Problem

Did you replace the steering worm gear in the gearbox or the gearbox itself?
