frown catalytic converter

I have an 89 model Grand Marquis(fuel injected). Is it safe to unhook the smog pump and cut off the catalytic converters? The oxygen sensors are a few feet from the exhaust manifolds and the converters are down stream. Any advice would be helpful. I have been hearing popping sound in the exhaust when the car starts and then it goes away after it warms up. It just started this when the weather turned cold. Help?

If you do not have emission laws where you are, go right ahead and cut the cats, but don't remove the pump, theres a sensor the pump uses for the efi system to know if its running to lean or rich. (actualy its illegal to cut any cats of any vehicle in the USA, shop can't cause they will loose there liscense). the cats just burn off the extra emissions, they have no porpus then to reduce car smog and another way for Ford to baffle us. As for the popping, its not the cats. It has some thing to do with the motor, I think it was off-timing that cause it for me. The car I beleive has a heat sensor (water temperator sensor), it says how much gas/fuel mixture to warn it up the fastes and timing to warm it up (its bad idea to drive engine cold). Your timing could be off by 2-3 degrees and the popping will accure. If I'm correct you should have a distrubutor? I cant remember if they stopped that all together in 89 or 90. But if you have a dist. and a timing light, disconnect you'r advance wire (its on the dist.), then the timing should be on 10 degree ( I'm pretty sure thats stock timing). Thats for 4.6 and 5.0 (or murc might be a tad differnt). I work on ford and murc is ford so I think its the same. Once again, any one else of this group fell free to correct me, I don't mind being wrong, just let me know nicely
