Check Engine Ford Crown Victoria 99

I have recently bought a 99 ford crown victoria and i love this vehicle, the only problem that i could see is that its "Check Engine" light remains on. I read this forum and read something like codes but since i m in middle east and my previous owner has no idea what code is, so can someone tell me how can i fix this problem.
My second question, in Japanese cars which i used to drive we were told to change the timing belt once the car touches 100,000 km but in ford crown victoria, i don't find anything like 'engine timing belt'. My car has already run aroung 187,000 miles. Any idea?

Re: Check Engine Ford Crown Victoria 99

You need a scan tool to check what the code/s is/are to find out why the light is on. You could disconnect the battery for 30min. and it will turn the light off. Then drive it to see if it comes back on. The best way is to find the code to know what the problem is. Code readers are around $100 for basic code reading. If you get the code, go to OBD-II Trouble Codes - OBD-II DTC Trouble Codes Repair Help Site to find out what it means. Even if the gas cap is loose it will set a code and turn on the light.

The Crown Vics don't have a belt. They have chains and if the car is properly serviced they will last 300,000 or more.
