Has anyone had any experiences with the natural gas powered Crown Vic police cars?

I'd also be interested in hearing opinions on the natural gas CVPI's.
While working as an LEO I drove a lot of different crown vics, but
none of them were the natural gas models.

Since you are from NC you might be interested in the following link :)
A friend sent it to me a while back, and it deals with the procedures
needed to refuel the NC Public Service Natural Gas Crown Vics....

Kind of interesting..

Thumbs down Natural Gas Power ?

Hey guys....I know this exists ,but where's the incentive for this anymore with the cost of natural gas /propane and just basic heating oil going thru the roof the way it is.....I have no interest in this concept from a personal standpoint.....But I assume like you guys you would just like to see the figures on the concept....I know we use this on some of the school buses and other service vehicles in and around the Charlotte /Mecklenburg County area of North Carolina.....The Price .not to mention the exhaust smell completely turn me off on this as a personal option.....Not to mention ready availability...........Allen

Never drove one myself, but the natural gas PI's have been very
popular up in Canada..

I am a LEO and a realist, and I know that even the "normal" version
of the CVPI is underpowered. My '89 modified Mustang could run
circles around patrol units.. My HemiCuda would laugh at all of us..

8.6 zero to sixty times won't make it anymore in the real world...

The CNG vics do a 0-60 somewhere between 10 - 11 seconds. Frankly, that might be fine for a PI on some carribean island where the fastest vehicle is a bicycle, but other than that, I don't think so!

I haven't had the oportunity to drive a PI w/NG, but I do drive delivery vehicles that have both options. I KNOW that CNG vehicles are much slower than those on normal gasoline. Also, when you run CNG, isn't there a detrimental effect with lack of lubrication in the combustion chamber? I understand that gasoline has a lubricant of sorts in it...

I will never drive a CNG vehicle.. When I was younger, (like 92-94) there was a local Sheriff killed in a car accident. His CNG vehicle crashed into a telephone pole, and well, (he survived the crash and) he burned to death. I am sure it can happen in a gas vehicle...but it is the idea burned into my head(no pun intended)... Kinda like my brother who said he would never ride in a dodge intrepid because he saw one flipped over on a 35 mph road....

I work for the vehicle maintenance division for the City of Charlotte. The City is pro alternative fuel solutions and we had,several years ago, CNG fueled police cars. We no longer do.

I see Bluesmobile and Two Trick Vics are local to Charlotte. Might like to get up with you guys sometime and check out your CV's. I just bought a '98 P71( not one of Charlottes) and am on the way to getting it on the road. Bluesmobile, what's your interest in '63 Galaxies ?
